  • If its your first time in Scotland then i would recommend the west highlands. Somewhere near Fort William where you can explore from.

To be honest as much as i love Scotland i would not recommend Dundee to anyone.

While on a cruise on Loch Ness, the guide said that we were as far north as Alaska! Which would explain it - must be gloomy in winter though!

    It's not gloomy, it's atmospheric.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.

    I've stayed here before:

We had a static caravan, but they do cottages and lodges as well.

Beautiful location right at the foot of Ben Nevis. The park is in excellent condition and various wildlife visited our picnic table looking for crumbs which the children loved. The caravans we well spread out so plenty room for the children to run around. The people who run the site are lovely and were happy to help as much as they could.

There's masses of stuff to do in the area. We went up the mountain next to Ben Nevis in a cable car, did the Fort William to Mallaig stream train ride (or line to Hogwarts as your children will probably know it as!), visited various castles, took the ferry to Mull to visit Balamory (Tobemory), the seal sanctury in Oban and did a Seafari from the Isle of Seil. That was amazing and we saw masses of wildlife.

Really enjoyed our holiday and I would go back.
Here I go again on my own....

60 mins to Glasgow from Dundee??? What - you got a rocket up yir butt?
na, its a nissan micra, i go to glasgow every other week, depends on who united are playing.
  • The all important question here is are you driving? If not a lot of the Highlands will be all but closed off to you because public transport is few and far between outside of the main towns and cities.

If you want culture and shopping then either Glasgow or Edinburgh are for you. Glasgow is right next to the Trossachs National Park which offers a more nature-filled holiday. There is also a Go Ape nearby.
  • Peebles and Innerleithen are not too far to drive to. There is walking, biking, horseriding all on the doorstep and only just over 1/2 hour from edinburgh to the shops, museums etc.
  • If you are looking to see a few things then place yourself in Stirling. http://www.visitstirling.org/
It has its castle and wallace Monument. You can also get there by train - making travel easy if yiu don't want to drive.
Stirling has decent train connections with Glasgow, Edinburgh, Perth.

If driving and basing yourself there then you could visit the safari park just outside Stirling http://www.blairdrummond.com/
You can get to Loch lomond in about 50 minutes drive west - and St Andrews in about 50 minutes drive east

If you are coming up during August then Edinburgh will be expensive because of the festivals, but the train takes 50 minutes from Stirling so you can take a day trip and see some of what the festival has for the kids http://www.edfringe.com/

    Hope this helps
  • Hello

I have just returned from Scotland, we stayed in South Keiss, just a few miles away from Wick. We rented a lovely house on the beach, and it was just so fantastic, we are definitely going again next year. We did a lot of driving, as there was so much i wanted to see and do, it was my first time in Scotland. And no midges at all.......

I have heard that the weather in September and October is usually very nice and that was comfirmed from the comments in the visitors book in the property.

We took our little dog with us and, both my Husband and I had a really good holiday, we live in Cheshire and so we stayed in Lake District for 3 nights on our return journey - which was also really nice, in a nice hotel.
