Advise please - merchant wont provide a receipt

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]Can anyone advise if a company is legally bound to supply a receipt for a telephone credit card transaction?[/FONT]
The transaction was for extra charges for an amendment of a return ferry crossing.

This is the reply I have received, I have not asked for a VAT receipt.

[FONT=Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif]I can confirm that, as no VAT is applicable to a "Tourist" (i.e. non-Freight) Ferry reservation, we are unable to provide VAT receipts or invoices. We can confirm the details of your booking along with the total cost, otherwise your tickets printed at the port of departure, act as a receipt for the transaction. [/FONT]

    They say they have confirmed the details and cost, don't they?

    They say the tickets act as a receipt.

    I cannot see anything wrong with this.

    Erm well!
    A receipt for the second transaction with details of what we have paid for or put another way what we were charged for.
    The ticket mentioned is a boarding card.
    The confirmation sent is a total of the two transactions detailing the crossing times.

    We hope to be able claim the additional charges through the travel insurance so a receipt specific to the transaction would be better.

    There is a general misconception among the public that a trader must provide a receipt for purchases. This is a convention - even good practice - but not a legal requirement. Of course, if you are a trader, it never hurts to try to please the customer, but you are not obliged to comply.

    So, unfortunately you cannot demand a receipt.

    Also they determine its a VAT receipt they cannot provide.. The ticket in itself is a receipt
