student accounts and bad credit

Options
Im starting uni in a week and have been trying to open a student account with santander for about 6 weeks due to them constantly losing things..long story but :mad::mad:

Anyway i decided to go with santander as i already had an account with them, (alliance leicester current acc with 100 o/d) however i do have bad credit due to being made redundant last year and a few things weren't paid for a couple of months, (car finance and catalogue) and after me running round after santander they decided to tell me today i have been refused. I applied then with the co-op and in 15 mins was refused again due to my credit score. this !!!!ed me off but slightly less than santander after waiting and waiting and sending them documents 4 times.

So am i not going to get a student account with bad credit? i don't want a massive overdraft maybe slightly more than i have now as a buffer i just want my overdraft to be free. is there anyone else out there with bad credit who has been able to get a student account? Any recommendations?

I ended up with bad credit history because I had a credit card (who I never missed a payment or went over the limit with ) who decided to call in a debt collection.. .I paid it off within months - if they are that strange then I'd rather get rid and no credit card so I didn't mind but it put a dent in my credit history... couldn't get anyother credit afterwards but I applied for natwest student account and got it with full overdraft!
some accounts are very fussy... some of the top students accounts ie: highest free overdraft.. most do not get those accounts or the full overdraft but I've heard of a few people being able to get the other student accounts... ie: natwest and one other... can't remember the name of hand... but not halifax to my knowledge.
keep applying - you might not get the overdraft until the term starts but as I said I had bad credit yet they gave me the student account with no hassles.. unless banks are getting more nervous with the economic climate... got mine in 2008!

    good luck ;)

  • Hi sorry I can't give any constructive advise as I am in a similar position as you - although I am going into my second year.

I just have a normal bank account - no bells or whistles or any other 'benefits' that other students may have. At the end of the day the way I figure it is that I will be in enough debt when I finish so to not add another couple of thousand to the debt may be a blessing :A

Sorry I couldn't be of much more help - just understand your fraustration.
    Finally dealing with debt :o

I'm the same as crystyl, I decided to try and reduce debt and never even bothered trying for a student account as I assumed I would be turned down.

Maybe if you keep your record clean for the next year Santander may be willing to give you a student account going into your second year?

Good luck for Uni, I'm super excited and a wee bit nervous. x
    Debt at Highest: £27,000
    Debt at LBM: £13,927 :o
    Debt now: £1656.61
