Gullible, naive and signed up for home phone in the street

I'm not talking about me but my flatmate and need to know what to do next if someone has any idea?

Flatmate was approached by some guy on behalf of talk talk in the high street and signed up to a home phone service, but isn't sure if she has or not :o

He took her bank card details and wrote out all the info himself and then handed over a mobile phone for her to speak to someone in a call centre who asked her if she understood what she was signing up for. She said she wasn't and the person in the call centre said they couldn't process the order unless she said yes. She said no and the person in the call centre said they would not process her application.

I don't know what details they took from the card - whether it was account number etc or the 16 digit number across the middle as he took the card from her and wrote details down. However, she has had a new bank card delivered today and was told that once she started using it, the old one would be cancelled automatically, so she's been out and used it just incase it helps.

I'm also the name on the BT Phoneline/bill that is at our address, so i'm not sure they can do anything without my permission anyway?

I could phone talk talk, but will they tell me anything? She hasn't signed anything she says. She's incredibly naive and has done this a couple of times before for non contract things and i've been with her to the bank to stop the direct debits/standing orders.

What is the next step to making sure she hasn't signed up to this thing I don't want at this household?

Thanks (not even sure if this is the best place to put this, but it's home phone.....as far as I can make out - she has no paperwork at all)

The only thing to be said to that is Doh!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Tell me about it :o

She has asked me not to go to the town centre tomorrow so I say nothing if he's there again :o

Even if she has signed up for something there will be a cooling off period won't there?
It all sounds very dodgy to me, it might even be worth going to town tomorrow to see if they're still there and sort out what she's done/not done.

Then at least you can cancel it properly if necessary.

I'd hope their was a cooling off period and i'd get her to exercise that right.

I may go into town tomorrow but these people only seem to stick around for one day at a time and the next day it's different 'sellers' if they are there at all.

I'll help her keep an eye on her online banking and see what happens. She hasn't signed anything and says she stopped when the lady on the phone asked her if she wanted to go ahead with the product.

The cheek! She is the one who should not be allowed out on her own.

So far as cards are concerned: if the service is a "recurrent billing" service, which it is, the card might expire, but the debits can and will be applied to the replacement even if the number across the front differs from the one it replaces.

I'd have a look into what you've signed up for. It may not be so bad and may genuinely be in your interest.

If you decide that it is not, there have been a number of cases of people signing up to TT, cancelling, and the line migration goes ahead anyway.

So if you do cancel, do it in writing ONLY.
