Transferring contacts from i phone 3gs to microsoft outlook

Ive just tried to back up my contacts on my i phone 3gs to outlook 2007 on my laptop which is running windows 7. Ive never used outlook before. I told i tunes to not remove anything from the i phone but after syncing it ive found that i have lost all contact information from the phone with nothing appearing in outlook.

There were no warning screens about losing any information and everything appeared to go smoothly.

Does anyone know where this information may have gone or is it lost forever.
Ive tried restarting the i phone but its made no difference?
