Electricity Supplier Backdating?

Up until November 2007 I had no record of anyone supplying my property for gas or electricity.
A rep from E'on came to visit me at this point and took over the supply of the property and I explained everything to him.
After this he arranged a pre-payment meter to be fitted and said I'll get a statement and welcome pack through the post.
It is now 9/9/2010 and I have finnally recieved a statement from E'on which suggests that I have to repay £2385  which had been on the account when the rep called? From reading all the statements on the forums would I be right in thinking that they can only back date up to 1 year for my Electricity. If this is the case then I should only owe £718 as this is my average usage per year. I have already paid back £660 through pre-payment meter. Any advice would be great.

Kind Regards

Lee

    No you wouldn't.

If the site really was shipperless for gas (or unregistered in the case of electric) a supplier can bill for all the energy supplied whilst it was so classed.

Put another way, a supplier can only not back bill more than 12 months where is has been their fault for not doing so. If you had no supplier, it was not their fault they didn't bill you.

  • Hi Lee

I'm sorry it's taken such a long time to send you a bill for energy used before November 2007.

Not sure from the information provided how the outstanding balance is made up.

How long were you in the property before a Prepayment Meter was fitted? Does the balance cover this period only?

Was the property a new build when you moved in?

Problems sometimes arise with new builds where we are not provided details of a change of occupancy by the builders.

I would certainly ask for an explanation of how we have arrived at this balance. From what you have said, I suspect this might be a bit involved. Therefore, I would have a word with our Director's Office as they are best placed to investigate this type of issue. Contact details are on your bill.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction Lee. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so.

I've already spoken to E'on using the numbers provided on my one and only statement and basically they have lied saying they have sent bills and statements before 2007. If this was the case why would a rep come round and explain that there was a problem with Meter Point Reference Number and nobody was supplying the property. Upon reciept of the said statement I registered for online billing so I could see the bills which were allegedly sent to me since 2007. However there are only 3 bills on my account which date from July 2009????? I have had no letters/Bills/Statements/Dissconection Notices or anything else from E'on. Obviously I cant prove this. Further more I had the same problem with the gas and when It was finnaly sorted as No-one was supplying what Id used couldnt be charged as nobody could be paid?
  • Hi Lee

As I suspected, this is quite a complex issue and definitely needs dealing with by our Director's Office.

I would write/email in. The address will be on your statement; usually on page 2 under the heading 'our commitment to you.'

Am I correct in assuming you registered with our website after receiving your only statement on 9 September 2010? If this is the case, you will only be able to see bills going back approx 2 years.

Also, for prepayment accounts, we only issue statements every 6 months.

However, you are entitled to see copies of all the bills we are claiming to have sent. Ask for copies to be sent.

As I said above, this issue needs to be fully investigated. Our Director's team will open a complaint and give you a full explanation/resolution. If, after 56 days, you are still unhappy with our proposals you can refer the matter to the Ombudsman for an independent ruling.

Give me a shout if you need any more info Lee. Will be happy to help.
