Hysteroscopy Has anyone had one?

I've seen a consultant today and he's booked me in for a Hysteroscopy in a couple of weeks time.
He expalined it as a relatively minor procedure, done with a local anaesthetic (sp) and very similar to a smear.
Well I've managed to scare myself to death reading some websites (should only be carried out under general anaesthetic etc) and now in a bit of a panic.
I know my consultant fairly well and trust him but is he wrong? Is it horrible and painful.
At the same time he is going to fit a mirena coil so any advice appreciated.
Many thanks ( I know this isn't moneysaving so if on the wrong board I'm really sorry)

Just an update, had this today, and it was fine, not worse than a smear and had a couple of polyps removed.
I asked about the whole local/general thing and consultant said he prefers to do them when you are awake so you don't have anesthetic problems and aware immediately if anthing goes wrong.
I actuall didn't even have a local and it truly was fine, feel a bit ropey now but for anyone who is going to have one of these, other posters are right and it is nothing to be worried about.

Please don't worry - I had one last year, under heavy sedation, not a general. It was painless, a few cramps aftewards, but no worse than period pain type cramps. A few paracetmol was all I needed, back at work the following day.
I had a little bit of bleeding/spotting aftwards, for a couple of days.
Hope that helps!

Thanks so much for that, getting in a bit of a state, at first I thought "great we might be sorting everything out" did a bit of reading and a panic set in.
I suppose it's a classic a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Does anyone else have a view?0 -
i've had one too, take a towel in with you, as i was not warned about the bleed. very quick and painless for me. they are only looking it does not cure anything as far as i know. if you want to PM feel free i can then tell you what hapened next for me.
good luck its not painfull honest.At last I have a signature.0 -
I may have to have one next year as part of ongoing tests, and I have been told that I will be under general anesthetic as I have not have kids and the procedure can be uncomfy if you are young and kiddieless!
Good Lucks Bobsa, please let us know how you get on,
Take Care

Interesting answers. I know the OP asked for other views but as I refused to have mine done under a local maybe I am not best placed to contribute.0

Just caught up on the posts. Again thanks to all, mine is an investigation into v.v.heavy periods and because my womb is in a strange place, no it's not on the top of my head, they are doing the coil at the same time. I've got 3 DD's and had 4 pregnancies so maybe that makes a difference. Any other thoughts?0

Mines is because of irregular periods, post coital bleeding and the fact every other test has came back "normal" which is a surprise for me lol.
What age are you Bobsa? if you don't mind me asking...feel free not to answer

Hi I'm 37 and have had this on and off for the past 8 years (off for quite a while due to two pregnancies and breastfeeding a dd) but it has reached unbearable levels now hence seeing GP and consultant0

I had one, and a Mirena fitted at the same time, as after three attempts to fit the coil, it had popped out each time! My womb is also oddly positoned and an odd shape to boot. My gynaecologist didn't suggest doing it under local, and I didn't know that was an option otherwise I'd have gone for it. Under general though, I had no pain or discomfort afterwards and only minimal spotting, and 3 years later the coil is still where it should be, so I consider that a result.0
