wedding cake dilemma

a friend of my partners is making us a 12" chocolate cake for our wedding, and i'm thinking of getting an 8" fruit cake from Tesco and putting them on a cake stand. The thing is, I'm really panicking that this isn't going to be enough.
OK, first things first - make sure you put them on a stand, not stacked - a 12" sponge base will not hold an 8" fruit top, it will sink into the sponge.
Second - do you have anyone who will not be able to attend, but that you'd like to send a piece of wedding cake to? Such as ill relatives, or friends who are double booked? Make a list of those, plus the number of guests.
Third - people probably will not want a big wedge of cake at an evening reception, only a small taster piece. The venue will be able to cut it into "usual" sized pieces, which will get eaten. With the sizes of cake you have, you will have plenty for the number of guests. And remember that wedding cakes are not slim little things - they are lovely deep cakes, and you only need a small piece!
Finally - if you want any of the fruit cake for sending to absent family & friends, tell them so they can save some of it for you, otherwise have them cut it all & put it out so you don't have any left over. Then you won't have to sorry about eating the leftovers like us!0 -

Thanks Floss - we do indeed have a cake stand, although i think stacked cakes look much nicer (and then you don't end up with a cake stand!! haha), but we didn't want a larger fruit cake. So the stand is all sorted
You have all put my mind at rest about the sizes of the cakes. I will just go with it! To be fair, if people don't get a piece... perhaps they should have been quicker off the mark!
We're not saving any, there's already too much to organise and pick up the next day!
Thanks for your help
8 days tomorrow!!! Exciting
