wedding cake dilemma

Options
hi all,

a friend of my partners is making us a 12" chocolate cake for our wedding, and i'm thinking of getting an 8" fruit cake from Tesco and putting them on a cake stand. The thing is, I'm really panicking that this isn't going to be enough.

We have 80 people coming to the wedding, and according to all the websites I can find, those cakes should be enough for 120 people. I just can't see how you can possibly get 20 slices out of one of those diddy tesco fruit cakes!! i know that the idea is they;re small anyway, but still panicking a little!!

i really don't want to buy a third tier because i don't want leftover cake, but i'm anxious that there won't be enough.. can someone please reassure me that these websites know what they're talking about, and these cakes will be plenty!!!! xxx

  • I'm sure those websites will know (if anything they would be under estimating in order to get you to buy more) and remember, not every will have cake, so there will probably be plenty.

what you can do is bag up or pre box some cake and put this behind the scenes ready to be brought out when people leave. in fact you can arrange the boxes of cake in a display with flowers if you want. The cake you put in these boxes can be from any supermarket. To be honest I am making my own fruit cake and covering it myself in roll out icing and marzipan. You usually have to pre bake you own cake 3 months in advance of the wedding to stop it crumbling when you cut. I am not bothering with any fancy decoration I am keeping it simple (elegant !) and adding flowers etc.
  • dont foget though that you wont be serving it in wedges, itl be cut into rectangle shapes that way it goes further too
I am not bossy I just have better ideas:p

it wont be enough, the cakes have to but into minute sizes, we got a three tier cake, to feed 80, and it did 20 with leftovers for a few people.

    were they door wedges???

The other thing to be careful of is the fruit cake weighs heavier than the sponge so you will need dowels to hold the cake up

We have a 10in and an 8in square fruit cake! I was panicking that it would not be enough but someone suggested I draw my cakes out and split it up! I got more than enough out of it! People don't need huge chunks just a small taste!
  • we're having a 3 tier cake,

bottom layer is 11'' choc mud cake which will feed 49, middle layer is 9'' fruit which will feed 62 and top layer is 7'' madeira sponge which will feed 20.

my cake maker said that a portion size is the width of your thumb, so thats what they'll get!
