Word 2003 Hangs

Strange goings on with WORD 2003 - Sometimes it can take 3 - 5 minutes to open a word 2003 document by clicking on the document when word 2003 is closed. It will though open the document from within Word 2003 quite happily. After a lot of mucking around trying to consistently replicate the problem, I believe I have narrowed it down to it being connected somehow to IE8.

The problem only becomes apparent after I start IE8 and then only after it has been closed the problem occurs, until then all is well. I repeat, only after IE8 has closed does it take 3-5 minutes for the document to open.

I hope someone can provide some insight into what is going on.

Thanks

Feedback whether it worked or not.
All too often when people ask for help with PCs they jump steps and can end up in a right pickle. So step by step help can often be the best cure.

Ok. We need a bit more info.
What version of windows are you running? Win7, XP, Vista ...IE8 works on all of them
Do you have any service packs on Word? Open Word, Help menu, About. Post the Word version number and the SP(*)
Have you tried running Google Chrome of Firefox as your web browser does it make any difference?
Try right clicking the Word Document, choose open with ands select Word and make sure the always use this to open that file type.

I have done a little digging and you should try the info here
Take a screen shot of the target line before you change it, so it can be added back.

  • Oneday, I really appreciate your digging. Although the solution suggested in the link did not sort the problem, one of the other comments in the link reminded me about Add-ons, and sure enough, when completing a mass disable selection, the problem went away. I do not know which Add-on was the culprit, just relieved to see, so far, all is ok. Again, thanks for your assistance.
