Problems connecting to Sky wireless broadband on laptop

Hello all sorry to bother you. I have posted this on the internet access thread too as I didn't know where was best.
Firstly I am very not tech friendly so my apologies for any incompetencies I may have.
Looking for some help please - I have just moved house and taken out a new sky package (prev had the same one but took new one for cashback!).
Anyway my broadband (sky unlimited) was activated yesterday (03/09/10).
I can connect to this with my laptop using the yellow (ethernet??) cable but if I disconnect this I am only able to get local access.
Was on phone to sky for ages last night and advisor thinks that because I only have 1meg speed (although according to my e mail the line can support up to 4 - she says this is not possible) this is why I am not able to connect wirelessly.
The new router (D-link) they have sent is a different make to my previous one (Netgear) - could this be the problem?
Was talking to my mum about it and she only has half a meg but still has wireless connection (she is with BT and lives in a different area) on pc and laptop.
I get an error message about rebooting router or putting in a different IP address when trying to connect wirelessly and have done this but still not working.
Am getting v v v frustrated any help much appreciated - thanks
UPDATE
Ok so today (08/09/10) I have tried again to get a wireless connection through my laptop (sorry for the late response).
I can still only get "local access".
I have tried to "diagnose and repair" and get the following information:
Your modem or router is not available.
If you are connected to a workplace or school network, contact you administrator.
Click here when you are done so windows can chack to see if the problem is resolved.
The weird thing is is that I have come on the PC to type this and I am able to get a wireless connection on here no problem. I am also still able to connect to the internet wirelessly at my mum's house so don't think there is a problem with my laptop???!!!
Again help much appreciated before I dare to call back sky
Thanks

- Automatically get new IP settings for the network adaptor "wireless Network Connection"

First of all, the internet connection speed should have no bearing on your wireless connection - that is poppycock.
Secondly, have you tried clicking the two links "Automatically get new settings" and "reset the adaptor"
Thirdly, check you don't have a static address set on the Wireless Network Connection.
To do this goto start, then click run. Type in ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click on the wireless connection and goto properties. In the list highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or IPV4 and then click properties. Ensure obtain an IP address automically is ticked and obtain DNS server address automatically is ticked.
Good luck!If my post helped you in anyway, please hit the "Thanks" button! Please note any advice I give is followed at your own risk!0 -
Hi trinitrotoluene,
I have done all that already thanks and still no luck0 -
Is your wireless adapter enabled? can you post a screen shot of your network details.

Steve I have a network and sharing centre is that the same thing as network connections?
How do I do a scren shot?0 -
I have just come off the phone to sky and the problem is now fixed.
Seems the security on the router was not compatible (or something like that).
He changed me from WPA/WPA2 to WEP (hope that means something to you guys but it doesn't to me) and I now have a new security key. Also moved me from auto channel select to channel 11
THanks so much to everyone for all their help I am a very happy bunny to be able to sit on sofa using computer rather than at table x0 -

Please ignore last post - apologies0

Om just found out that being on WEP is not secure - a little scared now as I go on internet banking etc a lot.
I have tried to convert it back to WPA (think I did it right??) but I lose the wireless connection again - anyone any ideas on what to do next please?
I should know better than to call sky as things just seem to end up more of a mess than when I started.
I know the computer can connect to WPA (prev sky router was connected like that) so I don't understand why this router won't connect like that0 -
Sorted - updated the inbuilt network card (2008 to 2009) and can now connect through WPA.
THanks for all help given0
