Is there any real disadvantage of a basic account?

I have an Halifax UR & my mate has an Halifax EasyCash:

Halifax Ultimate Reward Current account failed DD charges is (AFAIK) £30+/-
Halifax EasyCash Basic Current Account failed DD charges is £15
    (profiteering on failed DDs????)

Go figure & I pay (paid) a monthly premium for the Halifax Ultimate Reward account.

I've recently paid off the Halifax OD & moved to Nationwide CashCard+ & so has my mate plus I'll be closing my Halifax UR account next week saving me a monthly fortune

    This is incorrect.

On your Halifax Ultimate Reward account the unpaid item fee is £0.00.

I think that the main advantage of 'normal' accounts over basic ones is that normal accounts pay interest; all basic accounts (if not most?) do not.
  • Do any basic accounts offer the full offline debit card? (ie the ones that work at pay at pump, on trains) etc

Or is it not possible due to the non-overdraft nature of these accounts?

So applied for a First Direct account got turned down, Applied for Ulster Bank and they offered me a Basic account.

First Direct are much stricter than other banks about opening accounts - so you shouldn't assume HSBC/Barclays/Lloyds etc won't offer you a full current account on that basis.

Are you on the electoral roll?

Cheers for setting that straight. I'm going back awhile now but I understand Halifax have changed the T&C awhile ago as the zero fee didn't apply when it happened to me!
