Gas Meter Confusion :(
Hey everyone,
New to the board so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
I've just recently moved into a New Build house, on 10th Sept this year. I've been keeping a track on my meters just to make sure I'm not excessive but I'm confused with my gas meter and can't find anything online to describe what's going on!
It seems to be a new meter, it's got written on it m3 (cubic meters) but when I go to calculate my kWh i get something ridiculous and using the site mentioned in another thread (ukpower.co.uk) I get something like i've used £1,613.28 in 3 weeks! Obviously I'm doing something wrong.
My consumption has been around 5400 cubic meters since then. I've had the heating on twice, for about 30 mins each time, and had hot water on 5 times for about an hour each time. The water stays hot for about 4/5 days at a time.
Anyone know what I'm doing wrong. Just want to be able to keep a track on things and finding it hard when I don't know what I'm doing ha!
Thanks everyone,
Sam

when you're reading your meter, you're not including any numbers after the decimal point are you? Those readings sound way too high if you are.
To convert from cubic metres to KWH you have to multiply by approx 31.3

Well when I looked at the meter before I couldn't find ANY decimal points! I had a feeling I should be seeing some but I couldnt find any.
The only decimal point was are in front of everyone number 1 (.1).
I'll check again tomorrow morning and see if I can find one.
Thanks for your help!
Any more are very welcome0 -
The reading on your Gas meter should consist of 5 numbers and a red rectangle with 3 more numbers in. Ignore the numbers in the red rectangle.
Your reading being only for a couple of weeks should have the first 3 numbers as zeros, something like ...00065 unless they used a second hand meter which is unlikely.
To work out your consumption in KwH take your reading from the first 5 numbers only, (in my example 65) then multiply it by 39.4 then multiply it by 1.02264 then divide by 3.6.
In my example this would be 65x39.4x1.02264/3.6 = 727.5KwH
Using Ebico prices for gas which is 2.55p/KwH, this would work out at £16.37
Hope that is clear, if not just shout.0 -
Phew, thanks a lot djohn2002uk! That seems to work.
Didn't notice the red rectangle box before, but if I exclude them numbers then its works out at about £2.09 which sounds much more realistic! Ha!
Thanks again everyone0 -
