Virgin won't connect me!!

I live in a Virgin cable area, however they won't connect me as my house is about 10 metres (down a private driveway) away from the nearest cable connection point on the public footpath. I was told by the Virgin site surveyor that they weren't prepared to route the cable under the driveway (no reason was given, however I suppose cost is a factor?)
I'd really like to move away from the hotch -potch setup I have (BT line rental/Talk talk internet/Sky TV) & move to one supplier for all.
Added to this is that my broadband speed is appalling (<1Mb), I guess mainly due to distance from the exchange & the fact it is non-LLU in rural Cambridgeshire.
Are there any tactics (that have worked for others) that I could use to induce them to re-consider? Could I have a cable route put in (moled?) & paid for by myself in preparation for them to push their cable through?
Any (sensible) ideas greatly received!!

Time is a concept of relativity, yet as a concept, relativity is timeless.

I experienced a similair problem a couple of years ago with a house set back about 25M from the street, after many frustrating phone calls to NTL I spotted one of the local NTL subcontractors vans working round the corner and arranged to pay the lads £100 to come and connect the house up in their own time. I dug a trench, they laid the RG11 cable, spliced it into the network under the pavement and installed a brown plastic entry point box on the side of my house. Then I phoned NTL who told me my house wasn't on the network, but after I told them I had the brown box on the outside they sent round another engineer who connected me up with no problems.0
