Are you talking about in your home?
    Safer in what sense?

Plug your pc into the router and turn the wireless capability of the router off.

    (one way)

get an ethernet cable (£2-£3 online if one didn't come with the router) and plug into it.

It means your router needs to be physically close to your PC.

You can/should then log into the router and turn off wireless mode so the wire is the only way to access it (and shut down wireless on your laptop/PC)
  • You isp can send you one free, its not much safer but it can be alot faster as there is nothing in the way to block packets like there is with a wireless signal.

    Wireless - Convenience.
    Wired - Faster

Is it true that wireless routers convert the pc/laptop from private to public?

That reads as nonsense i'm afraid, can you re-phrase the question.

(is there anything specifically you are concerned about)

I suspect that the problem of unsecured wireless routers is probably the concern.

Wired only (WiFi turned off) is the most secure as physical access is needed to get into the network.

Unsecured WiFi gives free access to the internet and maybe your data too depending on how your network was set up.

Encryption stops free access. How well depends on the encryption used....

WEP isn't very secure as a quick google search on WEP hacking will show.

WPA and WPA2 aren't 100% secure either but are a whole lot better. You are unlikely to be hacked using either.
