My electric meter is showing a usage os 123 units a day
My situation is i do live in a 3 bedroom terraced,we are 2 adults and a teenager ,my husband is out all day ,my son is also out .
We do have a tv ,2 laptops ,a small fridge ,a small freezer ,a cooker that is used about half an hour a day,a microwave and a washing machine and no other electric appliances,CH is gas.
I do have an outstanding balance of £800 and they want me to pay £130 for monthly usage plus £15 a weeks to clear the balance. But with 123 units a day i will be paying more than £13 a day for electric,so something must be wrong.
The gas seems the same as according to them i do have an outstanding balance of nearly £700 ,i have been complaining and refused to pay because i never ever had bills like this so they decided i should have a pre pay gas meter and they will transfer the electric and gas outstanding amounts to the meter and i will have to pay £15 a week for electric and £15 a week for gas plus the amount i will be using. So i will have to pay over £200 a month on the pre paid gas meter plus over £13 a day for electricity for my usage.
I know this readings are showing on my meter but i know they are wrong.Been phoning them but they just don't listen they said they will send someone to check the meter but if the meter shows those units per day i will have to pay it.
Does anyone knows where to go from here as my meter is showing 12 times more than the average uk daily usage. And also what can i do to avoid the excruciating £30 a week to clear a usage that i do not used :(
please can you help?

Are you reading the meter yourself? If so, are you reading it correctly?

For what you have said above 12 units a day would be about right, could it be that you are using 12.3 units day?

The last digit on most meters is showing tenths of a unit.
  • Yep i'm reading it right,i'm not taking ito account the digits on the right on the red .
I really don't know what to do just spoke to them again and they said they will send someone out to see if the meter is running slow because they work on batteries i said that's not the case as it is running too fast and the guy just said if the engineer can't identify the fault it means the meter is right and i'm using more electricity and i'm trying to deceive them  i'm just going really mad with this.It is impossible to use 123 /130 units a day but they are just saying that i will have to pay it regardless.Just in the past hour the meters shows 11 units used and i do not have anything other than the fridge on and my telly on .
I wanted to raise a complain but they said someone is already looking into it ,then i asked for the complain number and they said there is no number that the person dealing with that will call me at some point.

If you turn your electricity off at the consumer unit, does the meter continue register consumption?
Some gas meters have batteries, not electricity meters.
You have not got an immersion heater on 24/7 by any chance?
That gum you like is coming back in style.

If an immersion was drawing THAT sort of power it would have melted the tank and all the adjoining pipes by now! The very most it could draw is 3KW per hours and it wouldn't sustain that load for long before boiling the tank if the thermostat was faulty.

Google the supplier's complaint procedure and write to them at the address given in that.

Head your letter COMPLAINT and go on to say you wish the whole account to be put into dispute until a resolution is provided.

Most suppliers procedures say they will respond in 1 or 2 weeks at most, although they have up to 8 weeeks to come to a full resolution. That reply will almost certainly give you a reference number, and if no resolution is provided after 8 weeks you can take it to the ombudsman.

I would think this is either an inaccurate meter reading, or perhaps an inaccurate meter. Either would be easy to identify and rectify, and if either is the case, you won't owe what they say.

Firstly it is impossible to use 130 kWh a day.

Secondly when you phone a call centre you are dealing with staff who don't want to deal with problems.

As suggested above, WRITE and you will get a response - if you are phoned by them, say you want a response in writing.

Hi Pip2010 - As already posted, Don't wast your time with phone calls or Emails - WRITE - heading the letter complaint.

In your 1st post you mentioned that your Gas Bills have also shown a big increase in consumption. If your gas meter has been changed, maybe even before you moved in, it's possible that you are still being charged for an old style Imperial meter, when in fact the new one is Metric
    How to check
Look at the front of the meter, it will be marked Ft3 for Imperial or M3 for Metric
Next look at a recent bill: On the line which says how many meter units were used, followed by an equation, followed by the Kw charged - Divide the Kw charged by the meter units. If the answer is appx. 11 you are being charged for a Metric meter, if the answer is appx. 31 your are being charged for an Imperial meter - Charges for a Metric meter that are wrongly based on Imperial calculations will be produce bills that are roughly 200% higher than they should be
If there is mis-match between the meter and the charging method GET ONTO YOUR SUPPLIER IMMEDIATELY
