Aviraor MSE

Hi, I am trying to clean up my daughters laptop, succesfully with Donnies help. She has Avira, but it had 15 infections, which malwarebytes found and removed. Would MSE be a better choice of AV? I know it,s subjective, used MSE myself, found it good, never had Avira.I use AVG, because it doesn,t interfere with Rapport, which daughter doesn,t use. Opinions much appreciated:beer:

its always a difficult choice. in the last round of tests http://www.av-comparatives.org/images/stories/test/ondret/avc_report25.pdf
Avira had a detection rate of 99.3%
whereas MSE had a detection rate of 96.3%
and AVG had a detection rate of 94.2%

when you consider there are millions of virus's about (the test in question tested just over 1.2 mil) that leaves a large amount of potential virus's which any virus scanner can miss (over 8000 for avira and over 44000 for MSE and over 69000 for AVG based on the test) which is why its always better to run Malwarebytes at least once every month,

no scanner is going to get 100% of all infections that is why its always better to have a mix of security precautions (my personal security precaution is to not use microsoft windows if at all possible and use Ubuntu but thats another discussion altogether) - the most important one of course is sensible browsing
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

Do you mean Avira Antivir Personal AV or do you mean a rogue security programme that copies the Antivir name?

If it is the legitimate Antivir I don't understand how it had 15 infections unless it was downloaded from a dodgy site?

All I can say is that Avira AV is one of the best free ones out there, top 3 being Avira, Avast or MSE.

People keep quoting these av-comparitives tests and how Avira received a detection rate of 99.3% however these people should read what the report actually states!

The Avira version tested was Avira Antivirus Premium 9.0.0.457 NOT Avira AntiVir Personal Free antivirus version (Free of charge basic protection)

What detection rate would Avira Antivir free version have scored without the following Premium only features? Not 99.3%.

    AntiPhishing protection against phishing

AntiVirProActiv detects unknown viruses by behavior

    WebGuard protection against malicious websites

AntiDrive-by stops malware downloads while surfing

MailGuard scans incoming and outgoing emails

    Avira comparison chart here

and if you look at the test the ONLY extra in the premium version over the free which could have any possible effect on the test is the AntiVirProActiv since the test does not test phishing, does not test websites and does not check email scanning, it is a on demand scanner so is looking for the virus's already on the test system, so is more a test of the definitions and the scanning effectiveness of the program

that is so very kind of you to allow me to do so.

yes i do not know exactly how much difference the free to premium version differences will make, however from my interpretations of the information available as stated above there is only one of the extra's you get in the premium version which i could see making any difference to the result of this specific test, and which i personally dont see making a massive difference.

dont get me wrong i am not saying MSE is a bad anti virus, in fact is is one of the 3 i recommend for people to use (Avira, Avast or MSE) and as stated no anti virus is perfect it is very much about making a choice based on the current information, which is the reason i also provide the link to the report so people can check the details out themself

Hi, Thanks. Being as Malwarebytes detected them, and removed them, they more than likely were Malware. There were Trojans amongst them.

There ,s what was found. The Malware doctor was requesting £30+ to remove infections it said it had found, thatswhen daughter passed it to me.She only had Avira free on, so I put Malwarebytes, Spybot, which picked up a Trojan also, it,s clean now.???
