Docs won't usually issue sick notes for less than 7 days. They will give you the self- cert form- kept in most doc's surgeries.
Used to get a forest of self-certs in a previous job every week- some of the comments were inventive!

They can issue a private note.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Yes, if he's off for any amount of time they can ask for a sick note (but its usually a self cert note) Usually for less than 3 days its a self-cert form just for company records, you can get these from the doctors or your employer will have one. If hes off longer than 3 days and is likely to be off even longer a doctor will give a sick note - ours never give one unless you're off for more than a week, and they charge you! If he's off for more than 7 days he will definitely have to have a sick note from the doctors.

Some companies ask you to fill in a form for any amount of sickness - half a day or even 1 day just for their personnel records. It can also help to explain sickness periods (long term health issues that they may need to consider, i.e. if work is making them ill - or also for people who are always off sick on a monday morning - pulling a sicky). One of our guys was off odd days here and there for stomach bugs then 2 months later rushed in for an emergency appendicitis...he rang us from his hospital bed! That explained his previous illnesses and we included them all as "one incident of sickness" so he wasn't disciplined for being off all the time - as they were obviously all related.

Telling your employer about your illness

If you have been off work sick for seven days or less your employer can ask you to confirm that you’ve been ill. You can do this by filling in a form yourself when you return to work. This is called self-certification.

Does your husband's workplace have a sickness policy that he has access to? This should state if a doctor's note is necessary after less than 7 days illness.
