Can work demand a sick note on first day off?

Options
My husband phoned in sick today, when he woke up this morning he said his back was "locked" and he couldn't move it, he said its eased off a little since waking up (he was up at 4am for work).

Anyway, his boss has just rung him and demanded a sick note, we think hes a little annoyed because it turns out two other people haven't turned into work today.

Can he demand the sick note, chances are if his back is starting to ease off now, he will be at work tomorrow anyway.

Thanks

    Yes the employer can ask.

When he returns to work, if it less than 7 days absence, he should complete a self certification form.

His boss is saying he wants one from the doctors.

So should the company have the self certification forms, or will he get one from somewhere else, sorry for being a bit dumb, ive never had to fill one out and DH is never off work.

He doesn't need one from a doctor for absences less than 7 days.

If you google self certification the form is the first thing that pops up. You can print it out and fill that in

"DH is never off work" - obviously not the case

Thanks for the link but unfortunately we dont have a printer.

Sorry I shall rephrase that DH is rarely off work, today is his first day off this year.

His workplace may be able to supply one.

What has he done when he has been off before, has he never filled one in?

The last time he was off sick he worked for an agency and they didn't ask him for anything.

His employers are presumably ensuring that all the correct paperwork is being kept. They may well have their own form for your OH to complete.

Docs won't usually issue sick notes for less than 7 days. They will give you the self- cert form- kept in most doc's surgeries.
Used to get a forest of self-certs in a previous job every week- some of the comments were inventive!

Maybe not the best idea; the employer are asking for a sick note for a reason; if he is genuinely ill the doctor will give him one although may charge for this. If he doesnt get one he may find they insist on one on return and by that point recovered he cant get one in which case things could get sticky.

The only problem with this is that he intends on going back to work tomorrow anyway.
