Bank errors at counters

Hello people

I don't know if this is the right place to post!!

Just before holiday I paid my water bill across the counter at LLoyds banks.

When coming off hols I had a letter off Severn Trent to say that I still owed them £45.

I immediately got out my stamped receipt and saw to my horror that the wrong amount was written down....

Instead of £161.19 which was the correct amount, the counter clerk had put £116.19.

I know I didn't pay this amount has I had withdrawn the money out of the cashpoint. I clearly remember not having any change..
I went into the bank first thing monday morning. The lady who was on that day wasn't in.

Today she rang me saying there was no mistake, and she remembers me giving her £120. If I had done that I would have had a lot of changed. I never part pay any bill payments.

But I did this in cash She says for me to talk to the manager who is not in until a week on monday.

Can anyone tell me how I can find out if there was a mistake in cashing up etc..

Thanks

    What bank was it.

Did you not get a receipt of deposit.

Did you not verify the amount before pressing confirm button providing the bank uses chip and pin machines to verify you.

Any mistake in cashing up would have been spotted that night. I am amazed that a bank clerk who deals with hundreds of customers a day can remember your specific transaction from a week previously.

However to put it bluntly you are like Jordan would be after a boat trip with the Chippendales - Well and truly fu**ed.

Lloyds TSB are notorious for making counter mistakes. They are now not giving receipts for cash deposits and then later deny that any deposits have been made.

I honestly don't know how they can get away with this type of robbery.

There's not a lot you can do except notch it down to experience and double check in future. Or use another bank.

They will give one if you ask for it.

did you read the Op? she paid with cash/over the counter and got a receipt which showed an incorrect amount. No use of C&P at all.

I find it hard to believe that she would have remembered you if its a few weeks later(after your hols) and what you had given her.. And that it was not noticed when they were cashing up..

though you would have had a lot of change whether you paid her £161.19 or £116.19 as the denomination at the end is the same on what you claim you paid and what she is claiming you paid her..

What is the point of using your card to withdraw cash and then paying it over the counter. Surely it's quicker and easier to pay at the counter using your card?
This is an open forum, anyone can post and I just did !
  • It wouldn't be the first time that a cashier has altered figures and pocketed the money.

Have a search there have been other threads similar to this but on the banking board.

I find it strange that a cashier would remember exactly who paid in what including the exact amount and who the payment was to, unless of course you personally know the cashier or something dodgy is going on.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p
It is not illegal to open another persons mail unless you intend to commit fraud - this is frequently incorrectly posted:)
    I live in my head - I find it's safer there:p

If the bank really had an extra £45 it would have been identified in audit trails and cashing up. The only explanation could be staff fraud which is likely not to be the case.

It is a strange feature of arithmetic that if you transpose the 1's and the 10's digit of a number, the difference will be 9 times the difference between the 2 digits. A number like £161 is a gift to anyone intent on doing a fraud - it is very easy to either pocket the £45 or slip in an extra deposit to another account.

I know nothing about banking, but I imagine this possibility will not be unknown in the banking world.

    You are wrong.
No bank on earth will not have a trail of cash deposits. It may be you need to ask for a copy of it but Lloyds will ensure you sign/confirm the amounts.
