Hi,

Can anyone tell me, what the basic benefits are for someone who is/has

Married, but seperated and

Has a bought house (their name only)
bought after seperation and

No money/savings - only overdrafts/debit on credit cards.

If they were not working, what help/benefits and how much money could they expect to be receiving?

Trying to sort my mess out.

  • They are able to work and they have one child, 16 years who has started college, but does not live with them.
  • Think I may have posted this on the wrong place - will try the discussion board.

If they rent, they may get LHA, they may also get CTB and JSA.

They own the house so would qualify for Support for Mortgage Interest rather than LHA.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • Where can I find out about these ; CTB, JSA and support for mortgage interest, and what I am looking for is figures?

Like ; how much do you get when on JSA

CTA ; sorry don't know what this stands for and

support for mortgage interest - never heard of this, how does this work.

Only reason I ask is my job has changed and am now getting around half the pay I used to, which now leaves me
unable to afford all my basic needs. As I have a large shortfall each month.

There is a thread in the stickies at the top of the board which gives basic details about all of the above, and links to more detailed information.

The Shelter website has info on the schemes available to home owners who can't afford their mortgage and are at risk of repossession.

Council tax benefit is a 25% discount for a single person. See your local council website for info on discounts and contact them.

Post a statement of accounts on the Debt Free wanabee board and they will advise you how to deal with your debts.

You're not planning to quit your job, are you?

Just to warn you, you'd almost certainly receive a sanction i.e. no Job Seekers Allowance for a number of weeks if you voluntarily quit work. This also applies if you are sacked through misconduct.

If your income is low, you may be able to claim working tax credit WTC if you are over 25 and working over 30 hours. There is also council tax benefit CTB if your income is very low.

Best option all round is a better job though and it's easier as a rule to find work when you already have a job than after a period of unemployment.

Would this be on the thread I have already or on a ne one ??? Not sure whether to keep all my problems together or start a new one for each problem??
