How often should house be rewired?

At almost 40 years of age, a rewire is definately a consideration.
However it will more than likely be PVC, and unless some form of physical damage has occurred then it's odds on that the actual cable will be fine.
A new consumer unit (fusebox) would definately be worth considering IMO, however using the "carers" partner to do the job is the LAST thing you want to consider.
Come to think of it, the "carer" has already overstepped the mark by a country mile in putting forward her partner for the job of "taking a look".........If that were my mum then the "carer" would already be up the road.Remember kids, it's the volts that jolt and the mills that kill.0 -
yeah, she should have it upgraded to mcbs and rcd in a new consumer unit...
with her condition ..shes only got to fill the kettle and spill water in the plug socket ..and she could get a real shock before the fuse blows ..
with the new system ..that is unlikly
all the best.markj0 -
I had a new circuit board fitted a couple of years ago as I was getting a new boiler and they said they would not fitt it unless I got a new board. It cost £400. Can be a pain as the lights go a lot more if a bulb goes.
I am sure the carer was only concerned for the person she was looking after. In debt but coping:j

You mention the fact that if the power blows she wouldn't be able to call you as the phones are cordless ones. We have the same and have a standard phone plugged into one of the sockets in case the power does go off.
It is sensible to do as even if she has a mobile phone there is no guarantee it will be charged if she needs it, I know mine isn't always!0
