Computer Courses for my mum...

Options
Hello,

My mum, who is in her sixties, has just bought herself a laptop. I've provided all the tech support I can but she really needs to get herself on a course on how to use a computer and how to use the internet. I've done some searching but can't seem to find anything appropriate for her. Does anyone have any idea for places to go for adult education courses for older people in Huddersfield?

Many thanks,

Michelle

Some libraries in Huddersfield have free computer learning "Some libraries provide learning sessions offering basic computer skills to help you get started. Ask in your local branch for details"

Some Age UK (Age Concern/Help the Aged) branches also run free computer skills courses. I used to teach one, great bunch of people, loads of laughs (and wails !) and the learners used to socialise afterwards.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

There are some basic courses on line at bbc.co.uk.

    Might be worth a glance.

I teach computing to retired people and I second the previous poster's idea of the BBC - their courses are really good for beginners. Here's the link to all of their computer courses - with my students I use Computer Tutor first, then Webwise. Your mum may need to be started off on these with a little supervision - but after a few hours she should manage on her own. They are great confidence boosters.

One thing I must say - DO NOT use the government beginners online course (My Guide) - it is confusing, poorly designed, tortuous, hard to understand and not at all suited to beginners. It discourages beginners, stresses them out and puts them off computing!

Good luck with it all - your mum will really enjoy herself once she gets going with her compter.

Try your local Age Concern, mine does one to one teaching, and teaches on thge assumption that user may not even know what a mouse is

I used to teach IT there and found many just could not get on with classes at local college etc,, one to one, at minimal cost, with similar age group is the prefered option for many older folk

And a cup of tea + biscuit as well

As Errata says. great fun for all, and no pressure or prizes, just at own pace
Eight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens
