Urgent Help with Car Selling!
Hi
My Mum is trading her car in tonight and my Dad had been taken into hospital (nothing serious) so she is having to go on her own!
She has just phoned me in a right old state and is confused about the registration cert. She is trading it in at a garage and doesn't know what part of the form to fill out. I've had a quick look at my docs and i'm confused too!
I think she needs to fill out section 9 and post to the DVLA, does the garage keep the rest of the certificate or does my Mum? I know the garage will know, but my Mum wants to be clued up before she goes.
Any help?
Thanks!

Just a random thought: if the garage doesn't know how to fill out the registration document it raises a couple of issues.
Firstly, why are they selling so few cars that they don't know how to fill out the logbook to transfer the ownership?
Secondly, if they don't know how to fill out a logbook then I would question their ability to be selling decent cars in the first place.
I'm sure the garage does know, but my Mum doesn't, and as she has never bought/traded a car on her own, would like to know what to do. What's wrong with wanting to be clued up before she goes and hands over her cash?? My Dad has always dealt with cars before and I can't blame her for being a little nervous.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

So you think the op is an idiot?
That's the tone of your post :mad:I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -
So ring the garage and explain that a family member has been taken into hospital and you'll be there to collect the new car in a day or two.
To be honest the registration document is pretty self-explanatory whether you're experienced in buying and selling cars or not. The sections are labelled according to their function, 'New Keeper Supplement' and 'Selling to a member of the Motor Trade' and so on.
The car has to be collected tonight (my Dad is going to be in hospital for weeks) the insurance is sorted and due to end on her car and start on her new one.
All I wanted was some advice that I could pass on to my Mum, she is capable of doing this on her own, I just wanted to clarify the Reg documents.
If I came on here tomorrow and said my Mum had made mistakes and gone to the garage clueless, you would no doubt be telling me that I shold have checked first.
I would go with her, but she lives the other end of the country and there isn't anybody else to go with her.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

The garage should complete section 9 of the Registration Document (V5C) and detach it from the form and give it to your mother. Your mother needs to sign the "Registered Keeper" part of that section and the garage will sign the "Motor Trader" bit.
She wil need to send it to the DVLA, my tip would be to take a photocopy and use Recorded Delivery - there are many tales of people being stuck with fines in months to come. She should also make a reminder to make sure she recieves an acknowledgement from the DVLA, and keep that letter. The garage may offer to take care of it for her, but she is best to do it herself so she knows if has been done.
Best wishes for your father.0 -

Yes. Section 9 of the certificate should be filled in with the traders details and signed by both the registered keeper and the trader. Your mother should then send it off to the address shown on the back of section 9 (do not rely on the garage to do it).
I would recommend taking a copy and ring up the DVLA after 4 weeks if they have not sent an acknowledgment letter as stated on the back of section 9
The rest of the certificate can be passed to the trader0 -

Thanks so much for that!
That is just what I wanted! I have e-mailed that paragraph to my Mum (yes she can e-mail!!)
That will be so helpful for her and put her mind at ease!
Thanks for the wishes for my Father too!:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:

I don't think you have any idea what I would or wouldn't be telling you tomorrow to be honest.
As I've said, the registration document is pretty self-explanatory.
The yellow bit is for Sale to a Motor Trader (the car you trade in will need this filled in on it's logbook with the garage's details)
The green bit is the New Keeper Supplement (the car your mother is buying will need this filled in on it's logbook with your mother's details)
The purple bit is for Permanent Export and therefore unnecessary.
It really is quite simple.
No I don't know for certain what you would say, but from your responses on this thread I can well imagine!
I'm glad you find it so simple, my Mother doesn't, so I came on a web-site that gives advice and asked. I have received some good advice and the problem is solved.:heart2: Newborn Thread Member :heart2:
