Problem after Re-installing Windows

Just done a re-install of Windows XP.

Last 2 times i booted my computer froze on on Desktop screen.

Restarted in safemode with networking and IE wouldn't start.

Did Diagnose Connection Problem and came up with
Windows detected problem with the Winsock Provider Catalog on this computer, would you like to reset catalog to default settings.

I selsect this restarted and worked fine.

Trouble is i've had to this twice now.

Any ideas?

Genuine XP Disc? Factory Restore? Did you delete partition and do a Full Format before installing?
  • Genuine disk, did full format. Was ok for couple of days.

Last thing i installed was comodo firewall, could it be with something with that?

Sounds like it. Uninstall Comodo and see what happens.

  • Uninstalled Comodo and started ok, hoping it was that.

I have a new thomson Gateway Router which has firewall set to standard, should that Firewall be disabled when installing another Firewall?

Better to have the router as a Firewall.

    Better having just the router.
  • If i have router as Firewall what is the best setting?

    Standard
Use this Security Level to allow all outgoing connections and block all incoming traffic. Game and Application sharing is allowed by the firewall.

    or

    Block All
Use this Security Level to block all traffic from and to the Internet. Game and Application sharing is not allowed by the firewall.

Now i have just had a program self install on computer which is why i had to reformat, but unless i block all it wouldn't stop this from happening again. If i block all on a router firewall do you get the option to unblock when downloading or do you have to change setting when necessary?

Disable Registry changes or install SpyBot Search & Destroy and include the Tea Timer.

I'm sure you'll prefer the second option. :)
