Sounds good, Poppy, tho some need to take care if on Low User, BT rules and regs say no computer.
  • I've just done it!
Nice find. Come on everyone great idea.

No excuses. If you really have to have the paper copy. Print the online bill for your records.

Even by doing that you save paper (no envelope), carbon emmission (paper manufacture, BT machines printing and putting letter in envelope, and delivery of letter) and more...

On top of that somewhere a little tree is growing becuase of you. Your own little tree.

BT are only doing this as it saves them millions of pounds a year , yes its a good idea they are donating a sapling but that costs pennies , a beter incentive would be to donate a sapling and knock £1-£2 off our bills each time passing the savings onto us and not into there pockets

Thats true it is saving them money but as we not in the position to get them to do more, its better than nothing and we have one more extra tree planted.

How long did it take for your account to become available online?
I tried to switch to "online billing" more than a month ago, and it is still written "Your account is currently in our online registration process. You will be able to view your account when this process is completed", even after an email to them.

I use online banking and don't receive paper staements. Also I opt to not receive paper for my utility bills and view online.
However, i am remortgaging and have to provide original paper copies of bank statements and utility bills for verifying ID and address.

I think it is ridiculous that because I have tried to save trees that I now have to pay to get me bank to send a paper statement just to prove my address. I can't just print off the online statement as it does not display my address.

Does anyone know a way around this type of problem without having to resort to going back to use of unnecessary paper?

When I needed original bank statements back dated for 3 months in order to get a hardship grant from my university I couldn't get them as I had opted for no paper statements. What I did was changed my preferences temporarily to get bank statements again and made the request with my bank (HSBC) for the past 3 months statements. I didn't get charged for this. Once I'd got the statements I wanted I changed back to getting no statements.
  • yeah they never tell you this when you opt out do they!
I just keep my current account statement, and gas and BT bills as paper statements because those two bills are the shortest, so far that has always given me enough evidence to show when applying for something new.
To be honest I think the whole no paper statements thing is more a way for companies to save themselves money rather than any concern for the environment. Many people still print out their statements at home anyway for their records and I feel that paper statements are a drop in the ocean compared to other ways these companies damage the environment.
Those HSBC adverts with the jungle in the bank branch really made my blood boil, they way they made themselves look the picture of corporate social responsibility!

Anyway in response to the original question, no I don't think there is a way around this other than Nemo's answer, or my solution of just keeping a couple of things coming through the post. When they are more than 6m old you can always shred them and put them in your hamster cage / compost (?) etc.
