can you take syringes in hand luggage?

My daughter badly injured her foot on holiday in Switzerland and is travelling home tommorow by Easy jet . She has 10 syringes of anti clotting medicine given to her by the hospital. Can she carry them in hand luggage. My ex and I are travelling back by car but she has to have at least 2 syringes until we get back. Any ideas anyone?

Yes - but doctor's letter recommended.

I have only been asked once out of ten flights but better safe than sorry.

I think it safer to declare it at the security check and show them the doctor's note. If you were stopped at the hand-baggage scan, you will delay yourself and others while it is investigated.

My wife carries an epipen (an anti-histamine syringe for bee stings) which she always declares and has never had a problem.

Hi, we have to carry Epi pen injections in our Hand luggage, we take a Doctors letter explaining who and what they are for but to be honest no one has ever asked to look at it, as the bag was put through the scanner I just said it contains Epi pens and they were like "ok thats fine".

She may not be able to take all ten, she will probably only be allowed to take what she will require for the flight. And as others have said a Drs note will prevent any hold ups.
  • Hi Rose
I flew to florida earlier this year, my injections needed to be kept at fridge temperature.

I took a doctors letter with me and told them at checkin that I was carrying them. After checking with various other people they were ok.

However I was not allowed to store them in the airline fridge, so had to keep in a cool bag with ice blocks.

Just to say that I take all my syringes for the whole holiday with me in the cabin. Under no circumstances am I trusting them to the hold.

Did not have a problem with the syringes. However my sis who had we had been staying with in Switzerland called today with a problem. When she hurt her foot we were actually shopping in France near the border ( my sis lives about 5 minutes from France) so we went to the nearest French hospital. We showed her European Health Card which they took a copy of. They were brilliant and did not mention a bill. They gave us a prescription which we filled in france the next day and had to pay. However we have claimed this back from the department in Newcastle that deals with it.
When she was treated they asked us where we were staying and I gave them my sisters address. Now they have sent a bill to my sister's address for about 190 euros for the hospital treatment. Now from what I can see Switzerland is actually covered by the card so I cant see why they sent a bill.
Any ideas of this is right.
  • The card only covers you for medical treatment as the same price as a local resident in that country. So if the treatment isn't free to locals then it would not be free to you. Did you have travel insurnace? As your best bet is to claim on that :)

An American friend was recently told by Cathay Pacific that he could not carry his insulin and Hypodermics with him on a flight from HK to New York. When he pointed out that he might need it on the 14 hour flight he was told that he should have a "big injection" before he boarded the flight .........!!!!!!!

He has made a formal complaint to the Airline.
