Special dietary needs

Today I visited a consultant about my baby as she has digestion problems which is very distressing to see. He has recommended that she has to have a diet containing no diary products as this maybe affecting her, and a daily intake of Soya milk instead of dairy. Is this something that I can get on perscription, the reason I ask is the weekly cost could end up being quite high?.

Thanks in advance.:)

Thank you tbh I hadn't looked at the shops yet, I was just going on what I remember prices being on the "free from" aisle in sainsburys.

Yes you can get tinned soya milk on perscription. DD had bad skin for a few weeks when she was small on the GP gave it to her. Its the same size tin as standard formula milk but just Soya.

Ask your GP or health visitor.

  • Definitely go to your GP, they will usually prescribe it for you.

I think there is a bit of confusion when talking about the cost as soya milk is cheap but I think what you are actually talking about is a small baby? i.e. on formula milk not cows milk? You therefore need the soya baby formula variety not a standard carton of soya milk?

Hope that makes sense, in the shops it is slightly more expensive than the ordinary formulas but only by a few pence, but considering the cost of any baby milk a prescription would be best.

A big thank you to all comping posters!! :T
  • Some GP's can be a little reluctant to give formula feed on prescription.
As there is a medical need for this, then there shouldn't be an issue, as it's not a request due to a lifestyle choice.

When my daughter was diagnosed as being intolerant of cows milk, we were quoted figures of 1 in 10 children being intolerant of dairy, and of those children a further 1 in 10 would be intolerant of soya.

Stick to the formula feeds, as there will be all the vitamins that your child needs.

Just remember, if you are still feeding baby yourself, you will also need to eliminate dairy from your diet.
Ask to be referred to a dietician, as they will be able to offer you advice.

  • I know how difficult these things can be especially for a little one. But why is it that I have to buy special diet foods that cost a fortune for myself - I can't get them on prescription!
I produce no enzymes which digest food (it just stays in the stomach surrounded by acid, undigested), no insulin and suffer from uncontrolled type 1 diabetes and very high cholesterol levels. As you can imagine the food I can eat is very limited. No dairy produce, no red meats, restricted types of carbs, and it all has to be fresh food.
Or am I missing something and it is available on prescription?

I think the only things that are available on prescription are things like infant formula soya, other allergy formula like Pepti Junior, and gluten free items.

Cooking fresh, from scratch is by far the best way to go.
It's the only way that you are in control of what goes into your food.

My daughter is whole protein intolerant, so it's no dairy, no soya, no goat or sheeps milk. All good fun and games :D

But carbs aren't that expensive; neither are alternatives to dairy produce.
