Tax letter received, help please.

Hi

I've had one of these tax letters what they have been going on about on the news. I didn't take much notice when they were talking on the news but now this has come this morning I'm not sure what to do and I'm so worried. It says I owe £410 which is more then 2 months of my benefit money, I don't have any savings, does anyone know if they will let me pay in instalments? The phone number on the letter is just busy at the moment and I can't get to speak to anyone on it. Got to go to hospital now but will be back later to look at any replies.

Thanks for reading.

From what I hear on the news and reading the papers, whilst it is not your fault, everybody seems to be in agreement that to argue your way out of it, you have to get yourself a Tax Specialist Accountant.

It seems that there are some loopholes or something that you can use against HMRC to get it quashed.

It is totally out of order that they are asking for this money when it was clearly their fault.

Does that mean the the people who are owed money by the taxman should not be payed as well? or do you want it one sided?

They should either do everything to correct the error or nothing.

I so agree with this but unfortunately this attitude is rife on these boards. Been overpaid benefit and have to pay it back?? Not fair, why should I pay it back, it wasn't my mistake. Been underpaid benefit? It's my money and they owe it to me!

Same with this tax fiasco - I bet those that get rebates keep very quiet as they bank their cheques instead of sending them back.

Thanks for the replies, but could anyone answer my original question about whether the tax office will let me pay this amount they want in instalments? I just haven't got £410 to give them in one lump sum. I get IB and DLA so I will need to find it out of that.

I think you should contiue to ring and ring and tell them your claiming benefits. Ive heard that from next year april thats when they will change your tax code and the money will be taken out etc.whether you like it or not. You can appeal but im not sure how to go about it, as i have not recieved any letter yet.

Im not looking forward to this letter coming.

This mistake should be written off!!

If HMRC owed you money would you allow them to write it off?

OP, they will allow you to pay by instalments.
    Gone ... or have I?
  • If you take a look on the daily mail online, it explains what they are going to do. Apparently they will write it off if you owe under £300 and give you up to 3 years to repay amounts over that in installments.
  • Try searching for this item on E-bay 270637324991 . It should help. As far as I can tell you are probably in a good position as thay will only take a small amount each week sread over 24 months. But the guide explains it all in detail and has the templates of the letters you need to send.
  • Please check this but I am sure I heard on the tv/read that you can pay in instalments but if you take more than 12 months they will charge interest on the following 2 years if you take the full 3 years to pay. I think it was something like 3%.

    Again please check this.

Do you agree with the figures used on the calculation you were sent? If not then you can ask HMRC to review the year again. Gather your taxable income details together for the relevant year.

You can make an appointment at your local HMRC enquiry centre and the staff there can go through the figures with you and if they are wrong they can help you request the amendment
