Windows Updates not installing

Hi, When we try to close down the Laptop, Windows updates starts 1 of 3 updates and say's it will shut down when finnished, but it keeps going over and over again because it can't install them and then we can't close down only by taking the power and battery out.

It is XP home with service pack 3.

another thing is when I look at Add & Remove SP3 is there, but no KBs are showing like everything else,

I did a search and it say's SP3 is installed.

I would be very grateful for your help.

Thanking you Drinda.

Login as administrator and run the update from there. If it still fails, download the updates manually and run them. If it still fails, report back here what updates these are.

As dogmaryxx said, which updates are they?

If they are high-priority updates you could try downloading them one at a time.

How do see what updates they are, all I know is the security shield comes on and say's it will shut down when finished.

This is my son's Laptop and he does not live with me, I have tried to get online with his laptop, but I'm not sure how to log his onto my connection, I have cut and copy a microsoft address that has a fixit tool for SP3, but it would be a big help if I could get his Lappy on line and let the tool do it.

How can I install the the updates maually.

    Thanking you.

Sorry I'm a bit confused, are you saying the laptop which is trying to install windows updates will not connect to the internet?

Are you sure it is windows updates and not some rogue security programme?

Hi, yes the laptop that has the problem won't connect to my internet. It connects to my son's when I take it back to him, that is when it downloaded the updates but would not install them, and prevented the shut down that is why I brought it home with me to try and find out what is wrong it just keeps trying to install over and over again untill I take the power off and the battery. I have now switched off the automatic windows security downloads and it works fine.

There is a tool on Support.microsoft.com/Kb/971058

But I can't get it on line at my home to let it fix it and you can't download it to a flash drive on my laptop so that I can install it on the Lappy with the problem

    any thoughts, thanking you Drinda.

The obvious solution would be to fix it at your son's home where you have Internet. There you do everything I suggested in post #3
