Santander First Home Saver

I opened one of these accounts on Monday - the woman (who ddnt appear to be very bright) gave me a general account number and told me to deposit money in it and then Santander will move it across to my account.

Is this normal to pay into the general Santander account?

When paying in with BACS or setting up your standing order, you pay into a general santader account - i think the details are something like 090000 and 00050005 - and set the reference number to be your savings account number. This is pretty standard on "non-payment" and savings accounts. I think you have to include the reference number with the payment or they won't know who/what account it is to be paid to!

Your savings will also have an account number. So, to set up the payment you pay as follows:

    Sort code: 09 00 00
    acc Numb: 0005 0005

Those are the same for everybody. Additionally, you also have to provide your first home saving account number (when I was setting up the SO in my bank account I set this up as the 'payment reference'). My First S acc number has the following format (I suspect yours will be the same)

    K 12345678 SUR

where 12345678 is your 8 digits acc number and SUR are the first 3 letters of your surname. You need to enter all that info with no spaces.

That seems to be typical of Santander, though it could be that some of the 'less bright' staff are actually just taking short cuts to get you off the phone and keep to their benchmark call answering times?
