Windows Search Indexing

A couple of months ago the Windows Updates included amongst the various security updates an optional update that would 'upgrade' my Windows file search facility to the standard used by Windows 7. Sounded tempting so I foolishly installed it.
I now have a small "Search Desktop" pane in my toolbar plus a new 'magnifying glass' icon in the system tray which regularly starts flashing and when I hover the mouse over it says it's Indexing.
This blasted indexing seems to go on for an interminable time and slows my computer down to a crawl whilst it's active.
I very rarely need to use a search and I wish now I had never installed the flipping 'upgrade'. Is anybody else suffering from this?
I have found an entry in Control Panel's Add & Remove programmes labelled "Windows Search 4.0" which I assume is the function I'm having trouble with and I'm very tempted to just remove this item. Does anybody know if it really is as simple as just removing this entry, or will I screw things up even more?
Any advice of the sensible variety gladly received. Thanks.

Just remember to hide it in Windows Update so that it doesn't subsequently reinstall.Stompa0

Update ...
Having spent a bit more time with it this morning, I now realise I can click on 'Snooze' which will effectively turn off indexing during an entire Windows session until restart ... or so it claims. Maybe I can live with this ... but I do need to experiment with it further.
Oddly, although Outlook Express messages are selected in the indexing options, so far any attempts to find an email by its content is failing despite file content being turned on for .eml files. Something else that needs more investigation because that is one area where Search could be very useful....
