If your car specifies RON98 make sure you use it, or expect piston ring failure. I find myself reminded of when I was behind a Lamborghini Gallardo in a Sainsburys petrol station and the owner was filling it with standard petrol :rotfl: spend that much on a car and save a few coppers on petrol.

You might hole a piston due to detonation in a high performance car, but very much doubt if you would damage the rings.

Wouldn't have thought the car would overfuel enough to wash the bores.

If you're wondering just bite the bullet & try a couple of tanks full & see what you think...5p a litre ain't going to break the bank!

I use standard petrol in my Mazda2 (hardly a performance vehicle:D). I estimate I have filled it up over 30 times since I bought it, mostly from the same 'branded' filling station.

I do very much the same type of driving over the same roads on every tankful.

My fuel consumption per tankful, based on the brim method, can vary by up to 5mpg.

To properly confirm an overall increase of, say, 2mpg from using premium fuel would take quite a long experiment to establish that it was not just due to normal fluctuations

    But you won't.

If doing nothing obviously different can make a 5mpg difference how can a couple of tanks lead to any reliable conclusion?

:D You've taken "a couple" literally, I could have said a few but the point I was trying to make was that posting on here is of no use!

If you really want to know if the stuff works in your car the only way is to try it.

Personally, in a 1.4 Astra, I have my doubts but the only way to know is to give it a go.

My handbook advises 98ron fuel. It goes on to say that 95ron can be usd but with slight reduction in power.

My logic is always that, since my car is fairly powerful, my insurance charge me accordingly, as do DVLA with the tax disc, I want the full performance from my car.

So I always use super unleaded. Only used normal unleaded once because I was a few miles from running out and had little choice. I'd guess I've put about 30-40 tanks of super unleaded through my car.....so the one time I used standard fuel I didn't notice any difference.
