Car Taxed by Dealer...I think??

The vast majority of dealers now use a direct link to the DVLA online to tax cars it is called AFRL and enables dealers to tax the car.

AFRL rules state that the dealer must be in possesion of a valid insurance cover note in the name of the registered keeper of the vehicle in order to tax the car. In your case they did not have this cover if you were not eligable for the free cover and did not provide it in time.

The dealers are under huge pressure to get cars taxed and delivered ASAP as until they are delivered you don't pay them and the slowing down of cashflow could be a huge problem to them. In your case look carefully when you get the v5 for the new car to check you are down as the first registered owner of the car. If the garage is down as the first owner because they taxed it there name this will have an effect on the resale value of your car as you will in effect be the 2nd owner ( although any difference tends to be negligable)

If it is not taxed to the car but in your name this means that the garage taxed the car when they shouldn't have and in the event of a DVLA audit run the risk of big fines and possibly having there AFRL licence revoked. None of which affects you in the slightest so long as you are insured to drive the car it is all the garages risk.

I wasn't eligible for the 7 day Ford insurance as I'm just under 21.
I've just bought a new Fiesta from Ford, I'm 20 and they gave me the 7 day free insurance no problems.
