Parking in Manhattan

We will be visiting Newyork around the 6th October. However due to the crazy hotel prices and majority of places being fully booked in manhattan that weekend, we will be staying in New Jersey. We will have a hire car but during the day we'll get the bus into and out of Manhattan. At night, we are not too keen on getting the bus or train. We would like to take the car into Manhattan in the evening but need somewhere to park it that isn't going to bankrupt us. Anyone got any ideas???

  • i'd go on the train ....if you go to manhattan at night and park the car you'll still want to get about so you'd use the train. public transport is safer there than central london. why have you got a hire car ?
  • Parking in Manhattan is expensive.

From what I saw it started at around $24 for half an hour and went up to $28 for the day.

New York is safest 'BIG' city I have been to for ages, like all major places just be ultra cautious and you will be fine. Taking a Car to manhatten is madness IMO, check with concierge at the Hotel on routes to anf fro Manhatten from NJ. Either way have a great time.

Imagine driving to Central London for the day, and trying to find somewhere to park there........ Manhattan is even worse. Forget it, and use public transport..... it's perfectly safe.
  • You REALLY REALLY do not want to drive in Manhattan trust me on this, do you know the location that you are staying in NJ as most of the state has great amtrak train links into NY that are very safe, cheap, well staffed and run quite late as well. If you are planing on getting a late train back be sure to double check it stops at your station on the return leg as a lot of the later trains miss out the smaller stations. I know NJ & NY pretty well so if you have any other questions feel free to ask.

Parking and driving in Manhattan are a complete nightmare year round and time day or night. Your nerves will be shredded, your patience exhausted and your blood pressure raised. Don't do it it will spoil your holiday! Native New Yorkers get by with the subway and the use of yellow cabs. Follow their example! If you are in New Jersey get train or bus into city and make your way on foot/subway/cab from there.
