can OR take my car if i never bought it.

Options
Hi. am quite new to this and have my telepone interview with OR tomorrow. i was just wondering if they can take my car if my mum bought it for me a couple of years ago. it's worth about £3500 but it's in my partner's name as he works and we thought he had to be registered keeper to get insurance. i since found out this isn't the case and it was transferred from my name to his in july 2009.
will OR see car as my asset or my mum's or partners??

any answers gratefully received.

cheers:eek:

Beat me to it Phil! Don`t worry about the name on the V5. The registered keeper does not indicate ownership, just who keeps the car and where its kept, its a legal requirement so no problem there. Proof of purchase / receipt as Phil says, or maybe a bank statement with purchase on it if it was bought at a garage with a card?????
  • thanks for replies. yes she should have bank statement showing she paid for it. we traded in another car when we bought it which she had also bought outright but not sure if she would get bank statement as it was couple of years ago and paid by cheque.
really don't want OR to think i've been underhand when it was signed over to partner but wasn't even considering BR last year.

i'll explain everyting to them and at the end of the day if it has to go then it's a small price to pay but not sure if mum would be happy.

    thanks
  • Like I said correct keepers details on the V5 is a legal requirement, its not necessarily the owner. Good luck, I also have my interview tomorrow, let us know how you get on!
  • but if its your partner that is the named owner & your mum bought the car & its only you going BR? then I cant see a prob

  • thanks, it's only because i was on the v5 for a year up until july 09 when i transferred it in his name. i only went on the v5 initially cos i'm the one who picked it up from the garage for him.

i'll let you know how i get on. not feeling too bad but i know i tend to ramble on and start to get flustered when i'm nervous.

hopefully there is a very big light at the end of this tunnel.

Good luck to all those with their interviews tomorrow

Hi hopefullyhappy, with regards to rambling when nervous, I am exactly the same and I got some great advice on here to have a glass of water/cup of tea with you when you talk to the OR. There are some long pauses while they write stuff down and instead of being tempted to waffle on, I had a sip of my drink. Simple really but helped me :)

Good luck with your interview today

    Jedi xx

  • Hi. just thought i'd update how interview went after a very restless night. I never actually spoke to OR but a lovely lady who works in his office. She was very friendly and sympathetic which suprised me. Think i was expecting someone very judgemental and stern which would have been ok as I do owe £83000.

she was mostly concerned about mortgage shortfall when my house got repossessed and just asked what i had spent credit cards on which i explained was everday items after going onto maternity leave.
In relation to the car she noted that i used my partners car and asked if it was in his name which it is and she left it at that which is what i was panicking most about.

she said that she will write to all my creditors within 6 weeks. I didn't supply a lot of statemnts requested as my bank were going to charge me £6 per statement but she said she'll get them if needed.

All in all it went as well as could be expected and i came off the phone very relieved. Hope there's nothing sinister lurking around the corner!!!!

Here's to the future and rebuilding my life!!

there is light at the end of the tunnel.
