Guttering

Thinking of getting our guttering done as nearly all the seals are leaking back/front of the house, considering PVC with the facials as well. We have the down pipe we are unsure if our neighbours will get their side done. The person siad if they don't get it done he will have to make a seal to connect our side to their pipe but he advise to put it in writing to confirm what is being done incase of any liabilities for example we done that you have to pay to get it fixed. Is this the right thing to do.

thanks

Don't quite understand the question but any experienced gutter fitter will be able to connect upvc to any other material gutter joint/pipe outlet using the specified connector. This should not cause any problem with your neighbours guttering.

I also do not see why your neighbour would be liable to connect his side of the guttering to yours. It is you changing the guttering so my gut feeling is that it is your responsibility to sort out this sort of connection.

I am sure someonewill be along shortly to link some usful legislation on this.

My question was a bit of a waffle!!

The guttering in the back needs changing and we have the downpipe. if our neighbour agrees the whole length of the guttering will be replaced. If not then it will be our half. The person who might do it said that the problem will be connecting our new guttering to the old one (the seal).

He is trying to force your neighbour to have their gutter and fascia done at the same time, simple business talk, make a small job into a better job. All gutters can be connected if not by engineered joints but by knowledge, and if your fitter does not know this, get another experienced fitter.
Lots of PVC cladding experts about know nothing about guttering, most guttering experts know most about PVC fascia cladding, from experiance.
If I can give any more advice please ask.

  • My neighbours next to me in my semi-detached house had their guttering done by some 'cowboys' who came knocking on the doors. The houses were built with OSMA 100MM squareline guttering. The muppets replaced the neighbour's guttering with 110MM squareline guttering (make unknown), and tried to connect the end of my guttering into the end of the neighbour's new guttering by the use of some screws and mastic. Not surprisingly, this was not very successful, and the joint leaks profusely. I doubt whether the joint could ever be made completely watertight. If whoever will be replacing your guttering is using the identical type/size of guttering, there should be no problem getting a watertight seal, he'll just need to use the correct connector/joining piece. But if he's saying he's going to have problems getting a good seal, it sounds like he's not going to be using the identical size/type of guttering - if so, tell him to forget it unless he agrees to use the identical size/type.
