HELP! Removing a slight scratch on a DVD-R

I have recently backed up years worth of important files and programs to DVD-R and then formatted my harddrive.

Now I have come to restore some of the files and programs from the Backup DVD-R it wont allow me to access any of the data, on closer inspection I have discovered a very slight scratch.

When I put the DVD in the drive it shows me the file names but when I click on any of the Icons it does not want to load anything, text doc or programs.

Is there any way I can recover the data myself? A friend suggested cleaning/ repairing the disc with toothpaste or polishing with T-CUT.

Has anyone successfuly repaired a DVD and how did you do it?

Any help will be great :)
