I'm not sure I understand you completely, but if I do I would look in Firefox's Tools -> Add-ons, and see if there's something in there I could uninstall or disable...0

You may be faced with creating a new Firefox profile, or reinstalling Firefox 'from scratch', then.
I also have suffered recently from VM's email antics, but haven't had the result of which you speak, thankfully...0 -

Now (after the downtime) if I put CDburnerXP in the FF URL bar it will then direct me to the VM advanced search page and give me a page of results rather than silently redirect me to cdburnerxp.se.
It's almost like VM is trying to DNS hijack my connection.
It looks like VM sends everything through a transparent proxy. Since I installed a squid proxy in my network it gives me an error instead going to the top Google search result.0 -

There was some mention on here months back.
You need to go to your VM account, and disable it from there.
I've done mine but can't find a link.
Yes I've found something.

These are the current [ tonight ] VM servers.
They stopped using the webcache.virginmedia.com on port 8080 years [ may be 3 or 4 ] ago,and now conveniently advise against their use.
Test https://www.facebook.com if it comes back with a cache1.service.virginmedia.net its transparent proxied.
If Virgin are having issues with DNS servers, they tend to switch traffic to proxy/webcache until its sorted then port them back.Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion. Excellent link, you don't need to be in your account, just on the end of their cable to do it !Disclaimer : Everything I write on this forum is my opinion.
