History is a very competitive subject for PGCE, does his degree have any specific elements to history as he will be competing with applicants who have history degrees and in some cases MA's in history.
He must make his application stand out through highlighting his interest in the subject. Also prior to applying he should look at the national curriculum and show his knowledge of this in his application. Good luck!0 -

Sorry forgot to add they want an awareness of wider issues in teaching so get him to look at:
Times Educational Suppliment
The School History website , the guys on their forum will help with suggesting placements too.
The History Association who publish a lot of information regarding teaching history.
Also looking at history qualifications will help so: GCSE, IGCSE, International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (this is rare to come across), A Levels, International Baccalaureate and Pre U because of the debate over the 'dumbing down' of traditional qualifications.0
