Its not a case of agreeing or disagreeing.... You can disagree as much as you like but you need to check your facts before posting incorrect statements about trading standards etc on a forum. The barcode is merely a series of lines which the till reads in order to generate a price. If they want to change the barcode to another one to facilitate reading a different price, or change the price the barcode scans at, then the only legalities are that they show the correct price on any signs or labels on the product and obviously not to advertise products at a lower price than sold for.
In exactly the same way a retailer can charge different prices for the same product with the same barcode eg a store with city centre and airport stores. If they wanted to use a different barcode to facilitate this then that is immaterial.
The only way it would be illegal would be if they advertised them at a lower price eg 1p and sold them for more.
The internal price file is irrelevent. As is the bar code. The crucial things are what the item is advertised, displayed and marked at, and that you are charged that price or less.
Opinions vary, but the law is clear.
The price that is on the shelf edge or displayed on a till is simply an "Invitation to Treat". The shop is not obliged to sell you the item at all. They ARE entitled, however, if they choose, to (a) sell it to you at a lower price (b) sell it to you at a higher price (c) sell it to you at the stated price.
Only when money is offered to and accepted by the seller and you get a receipt and the goods - the "Offer and Acceptance" - is it a legal contract, and then the price stands. So once you have paid and left the till, you cannot then be asked back to pay more.
Many retailers do honour a wrong shelf-edge price as goodwill - but they have no obligation to do so.
Hope this helps.0 -
went round tesco with my list printed from the begining of this forum (thanks op)
but failed to find any of the items listed. perhaps we were to late or tesco has caught on
and withdrawn the items.

Spot on. However, ASDA's guidlines for staff state that the price on the shelf is what the customer pays, unless the barcode scans at a lower price - if the shelf label is wrong, thats the shops mistake and not the customers. Regardless, the customer pays the lowest price.
I don't know if Tesco has a similar policy, but I'd be surprised if it didnt.
However, sometimes similar stock is placed with a label (eg a 12 pack of loo roll over a ticket that says 9 pack), in that case you won't usually get a discount, so check the ticket.0 -
The 'Stig' socks that people posted about a while ago, can anyone tell me, were they originally £2 and are they black with a picture of Stig and white writing underneath - saying 'top racer' or something along those lines?
Just want to make sure they're the right ones,
Many thanks..0 -
