I am on the essentials monthly direct debit gas/electric with British gas. Dont know if its the best one because when you go on the comparison sites they dont have this option the choose from.
How can I go about seeing if this is really the cheapest tariff?

It's a social tariff, not generally available to all, hence why it's not on the comparison sites.

What you need to do is get your annual consumption in kWh from the supplier, and ask them what the annual cost will be based on that consumption. Next input those kWh figures into a comparison site (choosing any supplier/similar tariff as your current), and it will tell you the annual cost of the various tariffs. Ignore any suggested savings/oncosts; you need to manually compare the annual cost to that given to you by the supplier for the tariff you are currently on.

Finally as you are on a social tariff, you may want to contact other suppliers to see if they can offer you a social tariff too. It's not guaranteed as eligibity cretieria varies by supplier, but if they can, get their annual price too and compare that to figures already obtained.
