Do I need planning permission?

I rent a small shop close to a town centre and I want to install an external projecting sign that illuminates. It would be installed at first floor height and stick out a metre or so.

Do I need planning permission for such a thing, and if so who is the revelant authority to contact?

If in doubt, contact your local planning office who will advise you whether it will require official planning permission.

I suspect it would, as there are a lot of planning permissions of illuminated signs around here, and they don't even project out of the building (but planning restrictions do vary by area, and it's tightly controlled around here)

I would also expect that pp would be needed as I recall reading lists of planning apps in local papers and seeing apps for illuminated shop signs. If you are in a conservation area, planners are very fussy about what is allowed.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • It doesn't require planning permission, but it does require Advertising Consent (and it's a criminal offence to erect it without the relevant consent). If it's a listed building, then it also needs listed building consent. Your local Council is the relevant body to contact, as they are the local planning authority - that will either be a district or borough council.

Lincroft is right about conservation areas too, we won't allow any illuminated adverts in such areas!
