Lidl vs Tesco Prices: My quick thoughts

Hi,

I'm in the process of trying to establish a monthly Food budget myself for me, hubbie & toiletries etc for our 4 week old Daughter. I've started with £200 per month with the aim of getting this down below this by doing more cooking from scratch & shopping around.

Any suggestions welcome...this MSE website is fab!!

My nearest Supermarket is Tesco (akin to nearly all the population LOL!!) & we have a Lidl about 8 miles away. I went in both last week & compared prices on some products we commonly buy & found some interesting differences. Thought it may just help others if I jotted down which I found cheaper & for what products, etc: - ))

Lidl cheaper than Tesco for:-
15 pack of crisps 99p - good flavours like Bacon Rashers, onion rings
Champagne LOL!! but still only £9.99
All fruit & veg VERY cheap
marg 45p Tesco = 59p
Milk £1.07 tesco = £1.11
Fresh soup 89p Tesco = £1.17
Air freshener 55p tesco = 64p
Baby Shampoo 69p (equiv size would be 93p)
PACKET Sauce mixes, cheese, pasta only 25p seemed v.cheap
Garlic baguettes 2 for 48p
4 toilet roll luxury £1.19 tesco = £1.55
Steak mince £1.45 tesco £2.19
Mince Beef £1.79 tesco = £2.40
Toothpaste 48p tesco equiv size would be 80p
Egg mayo made up for sandwiches 99p (Tesco £1.49) probably cheaper to make from scratch but I can't stand the stuff & hubbie hasn't got time to make it up!!!

TESCO cheaper than Lidl for few things on my list:-
500g cooked Ham £1.99 only get 400g at Lidl
Chicken fillets - bigger pack
Baby nappies 46 for £3.85 equiv to 56 for £4.48 Lidl's were £5.29 for 56 but proof would be in trying them both to see which best fit, least leakage, etc.

This works out roughly £15 saving on these items including week or so worth of fruit & veg for us (excluding the saving on the Champagne which we rarely, about once every blue moon !!! buy but it's about £5 less than Tesco own brand just out of interest).

Hope this proves some help to someone out there & at least saves someone traipsing round doing the same - it's pretty boring but worth it I think!! I'm gonna try & stock up at Lidl 2 times a month to limit petrol & also use Tesco.

We tend to buy as much as we can in Lidl's and get the rest in Morrisons or Tesco.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

    Hi,

I have a price book too, in which I write every price I see, so I know where is cheapest for that product.

The last time I was at the dentist (a week or two ago) I asked him whether you could use any toothpaste or if you were better to buy all the fancy-dancy stuff and he said - use whichever you prefer, even if it's the cheap stuff as it all has fluroide(sp??) in it. Tesco stuff is about 21p, I think.

Also shampoo, I use tesco value which is 29p for a litre, and as it contains water, it can also be watered down - great for me as OH uses far too much!

I haven't tried the nappies yet (I have them, but DD is to small for them - she's 12 wks and only just out of the first size nappies), but any of the own brand nappies I have tried from other shops have been fine, so I can't see why these wouldn't.

Basically any product which contains water (handwash, shampoo, conditioner, etc) can be watered down so it lasts longer.

    Hope that helps,
    Linzi x

I can't believe you even have time (or energy lol) to leave house with 4 week old never mind do all this research :)

  • I have only a Morrisons near me. All other grocery outlets are 1/2 an hour or more away!
This is a real pain and because of this Morrisons prices are higher than in the other stores.
Doing the weekly shop can take all day fitting it in between school times.
I shop at both Lidl and Aldi and find no difference between there brands and well known shop ones. Netto are quite good for cheaper well known brands.
Only wish they would come to my town! x
  • Thanks so much for all your comments you guys are a great help, I'm now into the store cupboard challenge & discovered I have over 3 weeks worth of meals in my freezer!!

I have tried the nappies from LDLs and they are just as good as any other supermarkets own brand.

I shop at Ldls, adsa, farmfoods. Farmfoods at the moment to 2+2 litres of milk for £1.60 which is the cheapest I`ve seen it,I buy enough in for the week and pop it into the freezer.

Ldls pot noodles are lovely,I get the chicken and mushroom ones,I prefer them to the "proper" Pot Noodles.Ldls Fruit and veg are very cheap miles cheaper than tesco. It does work out more cheaper if you shop about for certain things. But do make sure you make a list of what you have alreay bought in one shop before you go into the other or you will end up buying the same stuff at a higher price.

I've found the same as well. Same goes for the bread. I like Lidl and normally have no problems but I found its a waste of money buying the fruit / veg or bread if you throw half of it away.

Tescos super fit nappies are THE BEST. I choose them over pampers and huggies anyday.

  • I know this thread has been dead for a while but-

My hubby used to work for a company delivering bread and such. When he started there they showed him round where they made the bread, it appeared that all the bread was made at the same time and pu in different packaging. The warbourtons(premium breads) would be shipped first, then the M&S/Waitrose home brands, the Tescos and what was Safeways at the time, then Lidl Netto etc. After working and delivering for alot of the supermarkets it also appears that this happens to the fruit and veg.

Bascally I think that if your going to want your fresh stuff to last longer you have to pay the couple of pence more, but of course frozen suff doesnt really matter!
