Last week Tuesday the day after the Monday bank holiday I had to put some money in my bank to cover direct debits which where due to be paid I deposited enough funds to cover all out goings and thought nothing more until I received a letter stating that one of my direct debits had been unpaid due to insufficient funds in my account knowing that thier where sufficient funds in my account I contacted the bank to be told that the direct debits went out of my account at 1.30 am that morning to which I said Barclay's have there own clock and a day runs from 12 midnight until 1.30 am one half hours which they said yes so beware you may have funds in your account on the close of trading for that day ie 3.30pm but the banks day finished at 1.30am that day and any funds deposited that day do not count until the next day I did after stating that the cashier had told me any funds deposited that day before closing time would count so I managed to obtain a refund of bank charges how many more tricks will the bank thing of to fleese us!!!!!!!!!!!

I'd like to comment but in all honesty, that makes difficult reading."We want the finest wines available to humanity, we want them here, and we want them now!"0

common occurrence around bank holidays. Remember that funds are requested in advance of the direct debit date, usually 1-2 working days before. When the DD date is a bank holiday monday (or the day after) then funds will be requested on the thursday or friday beforehand. You're lucky this time not to be charged but wont be again. It is the account holders responsibility to ensure funds are available for direct debits by the end of the working day before the DD date, this will be in your account T&C's

The Bank Holiday has got nothing to do with this. You have to make sure there are funds in your account at 1:30am on the day the direct debit or standing order debits your account. This is when the decision is made to pay/not pay the payment. If you go to your branch at 9am the decision has already been made.
The cut-off time used to be 6:30pm the day before, but was made later when Faster Payments came in, therefore giving you a few extra hours to do a transfer from another account, for example.
Last time I checked, a day still ran from 00:00 to 23:59.0 -
Also, who refunded your charge? Front-line staff can only refund a bank charge if Barclays has made an error or if there has been confirmed fraud on an account. Neither happened on this occasion.0
