thanks for the replies, it appears she is 2 weeks short, and the chance of her finding temp employment is very slim

she could go self employed, and do anything that would bring in at least £30/wk - so ironing, cleaning, selling on ebay or at car boots - as long as its declared for HMRC purposes (prob would use small earnings cert), then she will be covered

i doubt she would find agency work, as most wont sign up people who are pg

Yep, this is an option. But she must do everything 'by the book' as it were. She would need to register as self employed with HMRC, pay national insurance contributions, fill in a tax return and keep coherant records of all of her employment.

It might not be an ideal time to be doing all that though.

I wouldn't write off agencies so quickly. If they want her, they'll employ her even only on a temp basis. It depends on the company, but at 24 weeks (or there abouts) she might not find it so difficult to get a few weeks employment.
  • this thread is very interesting.
Can someone inform me who would pay the maternity pay - i was under the impression the employer paid. Have I got this wrong?

If the op's partner stopped working before she became pregnant surely that employer does not have to pay her?

    thanks

If she goes self employed, she must pay Class 2 NI and not use the Small Earnings Cert.

You get a much lower rate of MA (£27) with the certificate, compared to the full amount (£125-ish) if you don't have the certificate and pay Class 2.

Maternity Allowance is paid direct from the DWP. It doesn't involve employers.

Maternity Allowance is paid by DWP. Statutory Maternity Pay is paid by employer who can then claim up to 104.5% back from HMRC.
