Virgin Media - moved home but no phone line now available at exchange

I recently moved home and stayed with Virgin (cable) for my phone and broadband however when I moved the engineer suddenly told me there weren't any phone lines available at the exchange so I now don't have a line and there is no certainty of when this will be available (I do have the broadband).

Has anyone else had this issue and do you know how long it will take (days? weeks? months?!)? I could re-connect the BT line but that will take the best part of a couple of weeks to do and the broadband speeds will not be comparable.

Do I have any recourse to reclaim all my expensive mobile calls back do you think if I write to them given that I wasn't told anything about not being able to get the line when I arranged the move?

The Virgin customer care has been pretty poor but then I expect that from most ISPs anyway. No-one has had the decency yet to tell me what is happening or how long it will take.

I'd welcome anyone elses experiences or ideas on this one.

No need to have both BB and Telephone from Virgin.

Why not use another supplier for your telephone, Virgin are not the cheapest by any means.

Use a company like IDNet, they do a 30 day contract, so you can change if you are not happy.

  • Has no-one had a similar experience out there? The problem wont be to do with the exchange in the BT line sense but some kind of box in the street that the cable phone line is connected to.

The cab will be full to capacity, (i.e no avalible E sides) I had this with a customer once but strangley there were 10 business lines "reserved"

I never found out the outcome but the customers was demanding that one of the business sockets should be "unreserved"

You need to take it higher so that networks can repair/add extra E sides

Have you thought of using a voip service over your VM broadband?

Have a look at https://www.voipfone.co.uk or www.sipgate.co.uk for starters.

The service works just like a traditional landline but without the line rental and call charges are usually much cheaper too. Various tariffs are available; features such as Caller ID, Call Waiting, Call Waiting ID, Three Way Calling are all free too.

You would just need an analogue telephone adaptor or a voip phone, both of which plug into your router. Configuration may look a little daunting but user support is good on various forums.

Are you 100% sure that VM cable is actually available in your new area?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Yes, I have broadband via the fibre optic cable but as described a little more technically above there are no phone lines available in the street/area - bonkers I know in this day and age.

To add insult to injury Virgin have still not officially told me or responded to any of my enquiries a week after the supposed 'connection' date despite a formal complaint. They also 'cannot' call me back when I call them despite having to use my mobile at the moment.
