Blocking a website to laptops using my wireless router - is it possible?

I want to block access to a website (WoW) from all the computers/laptops in my home.
I know I can block it on the pc but is there anyway I can stop someone accessing it using my wireless router?

My son can literally spend all day and night on the damn thing!
Any help would be greatly appreciated:)

  • Yes - log on to the router and block the following ports on the firewall:

If you need assistance in doing this let me know what router you have!

  • Set up OpenDNS (free) on your router. You can then block categories or individual websites through OpenDNS's dashboard.
  • Or simply tell your son not to play it when you say, and follow through with sanctions if he ignores your request.... (e.g. removing PC or internet access)

Doesn't work if he has administrative rights or somebody else brings his laptop...

Can you really set up Opendns at router level? I thought it was set up inside your actual computer.

Yes. Infact it has no presence at all on your computer other than the IP address of their server.

    It still works fine.

Block Port 53 on the router to prevent any DNS queries going out so person is forced to use the embedded open dns servers

So if kiddy has admin rights he can put WoW in the hosts file no need for DNS then Tron was right , the only way to do it right is to set rules on router blocking the IP address of WoW.

Maybe I am reading the question incorrectly but if I am not then your solution is much easier than blocking ports etc.

If its one web site (Wow) I am guessing World of Witchcraft using can log directly onto your router - normally by typing
http://192.168.0.1 and you will be prompted for your router log in details - (default for sky is (username) admin (password) sky

Then nagivate down the tabs and you will find one were you can block sites and/or keywords.

Add the required site - example http://site_to_block.com , save the changes and jobs a good one.

Also, blocking at the router will stop his mates getting onto the site if they bring their laptops around :)

Any probs then give me a shout.

99% of people have no idea what a hosts file is, never mind the technical know how to change it. I suspect that there are quite a few DNS addresses that would need resolving for WOW so using a hosts file would be a pain in the !!!. Not that it would make any difference if my first and second suggestion were implemented.

Blocking the IP address is silly - blocking the port the traffic goes over blocks the traffic regardless of IP address.
