    Hi Jem

    Thank you for your reply.

Yes it is the basic personal allowance and I'm not in the pension scheme in my job....so I will be making that call to HMRC

    thanks again

personally I would wait until next year after you receive your P60s from both your job and your pension and also know the interest received in the tax year 2010-11 (and dividends if applicable)

Does anybody know how overpayments will be repaid? i.e cheque or through the bank or employer?

my partners firm has failed to update his new address for the past 6 months and all payslips still say our old address.. would hate to think of an overpayment/underpayment notice sat on someone elses doormat whilst we are sat oblivious!

Cheque just opened mine (thought it was a bill) £3546.96

    SOOOOO HAPPPPYYYYYYY :j:j:j:j

For those interested the the letter also informs me that the calculation of the amount is being sent separately another waste of money !

You definitely should now be making some higher rate tax payments then. I was hoping you might be paying into a pension as that would reduce your taxable income and could have kept you in basic rate.

    Thanks

when I started my new job I was under the 40% tax rate and I deliberately did not go into the pension scheme as I wasn't sure how long I would be there...maybe that was a bad decision as now it appears I am paying into the tax system rather than into a pension scheme from which I would benefit

    sorry to go off topic

    I can't believe you didn't join immediately.

You should be able to opt back in.

sadly there must be millions of people who have refused 'free money' because they didn't know they were going to stay more than a short time

Even a year would have been worth a fair bit in a final salary pension. Always, always take the free money.

    Hello all,
Unfortunately we have today recieved a letter saying my husband has underpaid and owes (what is for us) a large amount of money. However it was for the tax year 08/09 and his employer sorts out all tax. So i'm hoping we can appeal but i'm unsure of how to do this so i'd like some advice?

I was told in a letter that I have underpaid my tax by £80. I receive an occupational pension of around £400 per cal mth. I received my pension today and it is £25 less. Told it is because I owe tax. Don't know if this is right or wrong.
