what cable do I need?

Hi - I want to transfer lots of photos etc from old pc to new pc and I've seen the direct cable connection thingy on my old windows 98 pc so now I think I need to get the right cable... What sort of cable should I get and where might I look for it?

Wonder if a USB cable would work by plugging both PC's to each other and dragging and dropping them over to your new PC

Crossover Ethernet cable if both PCs have a network card. Or put the old hard drive in the new PC as a slave drive.
